Peritol
Drug name: Peritol
Active Ingredients:
- Cyproheptadine
Therapeutic actions: The active ingredient of Peritol is Cyproheptadine. Cyproheptadine possesses antihistamine properties(blocks H1-histamine receptors). Cyproheptadine also exerts antiserotonin action (decrease spasmogenic effects caused by serotonin) and anticholinergic activity. The medication blocks hyper secretion of somatotropin in acromegaly and secretion of ACTH in Itsenko-Cushing syndrome.
Cyproheptadine can also be indicated for migraine's treatment. However, it is not known how exactly Cyproheptadine works in relieving the migraine's manifestations.
Indications: Cyproheptadine is used to treat:
- reactions(hives, hay fever, allergic dermatitis, vasomotor rhinitis, serum disease, angioedema
- Skin diseases(dermatitis, toxicodermatosis, atopic dermatitis, eczema
- Decreased appetite
- Chronic pancreatitis(complex treatment)
- Migraine
Contraindications and cautions: You should not use Cyproheptadine in the following conditions:
- Hypersensitivity or to Cyproheptadine
- Pyloro-duodenal obstruction
- Bladder neck obstruction
- Pregnancy
- Breastfeeding
- Urine retention
- Enlarged prostate gland
- In elderly people
- Glaucoma
- In children under 2 years old
- In people who are currently using monoamine-oxidase inhibitor (MAOI)
- Peptic ulcer stenoses
- Sudden asthma attack
- Premature or new-born babies
- Symptomatic prostatic hypertrophy
Talk with your health care provider prior to taking Cyproheptadine:
if you experience asthma, cardiovascular diseases, hyperthyroidism and increased intraocular pressure.
Warning!
- Avoid alcohol drinking while taking Cyproheptadine . Peritol may cause drowsiness, thereby do not drive or operate any machinery while taking this medication.
- Peritol application may lead to excitation in young children

- CNS: drowsiness, dizziness, ,dry mouth ,throat and nose, excitement in children, muscle pain
- Digestive system: nausea, abdominal pain, vomiting
- Respiratory system: chest congestion
- Urogenital system: Urinating difficulty
