Active Ingredients: Boric acid

Therapeutic actions: Boric acid also called boracic acid or orthoboric acid, is a mild acid often used as an antiseptic, insecticide. It coagulates the proteins of microbial cell, disrupts permeability of cell walls. 5% aqueous solution suppresses the processes of phagocytosis, 2-4% solution inhibit the growth and development of bacteria.

Indications: Antiseptic agent, a treatment for pediculosis. It can be used for treatment of minor burns or cuts and is sometimes used in dressings or salves or is applied in a very dilute solution as an eye wash.

Boric acid can be used to treat yeast and fungal infections such as candidiasis (vaginal yeast infections) by filling gelcaps with boric acid powder and inserting two into the vaginal canal at bedtime for three to four nights in a row. It is also used as prevention of athlete's foot, by inserting powder in the socks or stockings, and in solution can be used to treat some kinds of otitis externa (ear infection) in both humans and animals. The preservative in urine sample bottles (red cap) in the UK is Boric acid.

Contraindications and cautions: Boric acid is poisonous if taken internally or inhaled, although it is generally not considered to be much more toxic than table salt. Avoid putting on mucous membranes and on extensive body surfaces.

Adverse effects: Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, skin rash, the exfoliation of the epithelium, headache, the tangled nature of consciousness, spasm, the disturbance of renal function Overdose Symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, disturbance of cardiovascular system, oppression CNS, hypothermia, shock, coma, the erythematous precipitations (it is possible lethal outcome during 5-7 days). Symptoms of chronic intoxication (with the prolonged method) - exhaustion, stomatitis, eczema, local edema of cloths, the disturbance of menstrual cycle, anemia, spasm, alopecia. Treatment: symptomatic. Blood transfusion, hemo- and peritoneal dialysis.

Interactions: Must not be used with other antiseptics.
