Drug name: Plaquenil
Active Ingredients:
- Hydroxychloroquine
Therapeutic actions: Plaquenil belongs to a group of drugs called antimalarial agents. The drug exerts anti-plasmodium action and can be used against all forms of malaria plasmodium. The drug condenses lisosomal membranes and prevents the outbreak of lisosomal enzymes, interrupts reduplication of DNS, RNA synthesis and utilisation of hemoglobin by the erythrocyte forms of plasmodium. The drug also exerts anti-inflammatory effect and immuno-suppresive properties, inhibits the free-radical processess, decreases the activity of proteolytic enzymes, leukocytes, hemotaxis of lymphocytes.
Indications: Hydroxychloroquine or Plaquenil is used to treat all forms of malaria. The drug can be used as prophylaxis or as treatment for an acute malaria attack. Due to specific properties of the drug it can also sometimes used as treatment for systemic lupus erythematosus and rheumatoid arthritis.
Contraindications and cautions: Before using Plaquenil tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to any components of the preparation
- You suffer from alcohol abuse
- You have or had a liver disease
- You suffer from porphyria
- You have any other pathologic conditions like: dermatitis, blood disorders, specific enzyme deficiency(G6PD), psoriasis and etc .
- You are pregnant, plan to become pregnant or are breastfeeding.
Using Hydroxychloroquine may lead to a serious eye problems be careful and consult your health care provider for possible additional contradictions in your unique treatment.
Adverse effects: There are possible side-effects associated with this medicine that can affect individuals in different ways. If a side effect is stated here, that does not necessarily mean the fact that all people using Plaquenil will experience it or any other. The side-effects include:
- Headache

- Changes in appetite
- Diarrhea
- Abdominal pain
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Rash

- Vision impairment
- Light sensitivity
- Problems hearing
- Muscle weakness
- Unusual bleeding or bruising
- Loss of hair
- Mental disturbances
- Irregular heartbeat
- Sleepiness
