Active Ingredients:
Cephalexin
Therapeutic actions: Cephalexin or cephalexin is in a group of drugs called cephalosporin antibiotics. Cephalexin fights bacteria in the body. They kill bacteria by interfering with the ability of bacteria to form cell walls. The bacteria therefore break up and die.
Indications: Cephalexin is used to treat infections caused by bacteria, including:
- Infection of the kidney (pyelonephritis);
- Infections of the ears, nose or throat;
- Infections of the organs associated with breathing including nose, windpipe and lungs (respiratory tract);
- Infections of the urinary system;
- Skin or wound infections.
- Allergy to any of the active ingredients;
- Life long inherited blood diseases which can cause a variety of symptoms, including mental health problems (porphyrias).
This medicine should not be used if you are allergic to one or any of its ingredients.
- There are no known harmful effects when this medicine is used during pregnancy.
- This medicine passes into breast milk. Seek medical advice from your doctor before using this medicine during breastfeeding.
Adverse effects: The following are some of the side effects that are known to be associated with this medicine:
- Headache;
- Rash;
- Itching (pruritus);
- Abdominal pain;
- Diarrhoea;
- Vomiting;
- Nausea;
- Allergic reaction to active ingredient;
- Fever (pyrexia);
- Dizziness;
- Inflammation of the large intestine (colitis).
Interactions: Before using Cephalexin, tell your doctor if you are using any of the following drugs:
- a blood thinner such as warfarin (Coumadin);
- meftormin (Fortamet, Glucophage, Riomet, Actoplus, Avandamet, Metaglip); or
- probenecid (Benemid).
If you are using any of these drugs, you may not be able to use cephalexin, or you may need dosage adjustments or special tests during treatment.
There may be other drugs not listed that can affect cephalexin. Tell your doctor about all the prescription and over-the-counter medications you use. This includes vitamins, minerals, herbal products, and drugs prescribed by other doctors. Do not start using a new medication without telling your doctor.
