Active Ingredients:
Norfloxacin
Therapeutic actions: NORFLOXACIN is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic. Norfloxacin kills certain bacteria or stops their growth. It treats infections of the urinary tract and certain sexually transmitted disease.
Indications: Norofloxacin is indicated for the treatment of adults with the following infections caused by susceptible strains of the designated microorganisms:
Urinary tract infections:
Uncomplicated urinary tract infections (including cystitis) due to Enterococcus faecalis, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Proteus mirabilis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Staphylococcus saprophyticus, Citrobacter freundii**, Enterobacter aerogenes**, Enterobacter cloacae**, Proteus vulgaris**, Staphylococcus aureus**, or Streptococcus agalactiae**.
Complicated urinary tract infections due to Enterococcus faecalis, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Proteus mirabilis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa,or Serratia marcescens**.
Sexually transmitted diseases:
Uncomplicated urethral and cervical gonorrhea due to Neisseria gonorrhoeae.
Prostatitis:
Prostatitis due to Escherichia coli.
Penicillinase production should have no effect on norfloxacin activity.
Contraindications and cautions: It is necessary do not start to take this medicine before you are sure you don't have any of these conditions:
- dehydration
- kidney disease
- long exposure to sunlight (working outdoors)
- seizures (convulsions)
- stomach problems (especially colitis)
- stroke
- pain or soreness in a tendon
- an unusual or allergic reaction to fluoroquinolone antibiotics, foods, dyes, or preservatives
- pregnant or trying to get pregnant
- breast-feeding
Adverse effects: Side effects that you should report to your prescriber or health care professional as soon as possible:
- difficulty breathing
- confusion
- depression
- increased sensitivity to the sun or ultraviolet light
- joint, muscle or tendon pain
- nervousness, excitability, restlessness
- severe or watery diarrhea
- skin rash, itching
- seizures (convulsions)
- swelling of the face or neck
- tremors
- vomiting
Side effects that usually do not require medical attention (report to your prescriber or health care professional if they continue or are bothersome):
- constipation or diarrhea
- difficulty sleeping
- dizziness, drowsiness
- gas or heartburn
- headache
- nausea
- stomach pain
Interactions: Norfloxacin may interact with any possible drugs such:
- aluminum salts
- antacids
- caffeine
- calcium salts
- chloramphenicol
- cyclosporine
- dofetilide
- doxercalciferol
- iron (ferrous sulfate) preparations
- magnesium salts
- manganese
- medicines for diabetes
- multivitamins containing iron, zinc, calcium, or manganese
- NSAIDs such as Advil® or Motrin® (ibuprofen), Aleve® (naproxen)
- ramelteon
- rifampin
- sucralfate
- tetracycline
- theophylline, aminophylline
- warfarin
- zinc salts
Tell your prescriber or health care professional about all other medicines you are taking, including non-prescription medicines, nutritional supplements, or herbal products. Also tell your prescriber or health care professional if you are a frequent user of drinks with caffeine or alcohol, if you smoke, or if you use illegal drugs. These may affect the way your medicine works. Check with your health care professional before stopping or starting any of your medicines
