cefuroxime

Therapeutic actions: Zinacef(cefuroxime) belongs to 2nd generation cephalosporin antibiotics. It works by inhibiting the production of peptodoglycan in bacteria cell wall. Peptidoglycan is essential component of the bacterial cell wall that provides structural stability. Due interfering with peptidoglycan production Zinacef makes the cell of the bacteria unstable and undurable. This is ultimately fatal for the bacteria.

Zinacef is a broad spectrum antibiotic that is effective against aerobic and anaerobic gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, including those that produce beta-lactamase.

Indications: Zinacef is indicated to treat infectious disease caused by susceptible to cefuroxime microorganisms:

ENT(ear, nose and throat) infections: sinusitis, tonsillitis, otitis media, pharyngitis
Respiratory tract infections(chronic bronchitis, bacterial pneumonia, lung abscess)
Infections of the urinary tract(acute and chronic pyelonephritis, cystitis)
Skin and soft tissue infections(erysipelas, cellulitis
Wound infections
Infections of the bones and joints(osteomyelitis, septic arthritis)
Infections of the genitals
Gonorrhea
Peritonitis
Sepsis
Meningitis
Prophylaxis against infection in abdominal, pelvic, orthopaedic, cardiac, pulmonary, oesophageal and vascular surgery where there is increased risk from infection.

Contraindications and cautions: Zinacef(cefuroxime) should not be used in the following conditions:

Known allergic reactions or increased sensitivity to Cefuroxime or other beta-lactam antibiotics.
Liver insufficiency
Kidney insufficiency
Breastfeeding
Children under 3 years of age

Zinacef should be used in pregnancy only after consulting with your health care provider. A false-positive reaction for glucose in the urine may occur while taking Zinacef.

Adverse effects: There are possible side-effects associated with this medicine that can affect individuals in different ways. If a side effect is stated here, that does not necessarily mean the fact that all people using Zinacef will experience it or any other.

Digestive system: nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, spasms and pain in the abdominal cavity
Hematopoietic system: neutropenia, eosinophilia, leukopenia, thrombocytopenia, hemolytic anemia
CNS: seizures, hearing disorders.
Urogenital system: itching in the crotch, vaginitis(caused by candida), increased creatinine levels, decreased creatinine clearance
Allergic reactions: skin rash, hives, itching, nephritis, fever
Injection site reactions which may include pain and thrombophlebitis.

Probenicid lowers elimination of Cefuroxime, increasing its blood level.
