Drug name: Abaktal
Active Ingredients:
- Pefloxacin
Therapeutic actions: Abaktal(pefloxacin) is a synthetic antibacterial medication of the fluoroquinolones group. Pefloxacin exerts bactericidal action by inhibiting the DNA replication. Pefloxacin blocks the activity of the enzyme DNA-gyrase that is responsible for biosynthesis of the DNA duplex. Pefloxacin is effective against Gram-negative bacteria being in resting and in division stage. It also effective Gram-positive bacteria being only in division stage.
Pefloxacin is highly effective effective against Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella spp., Enterobacter spp., Serratia spp., Proteus mirabilis, indole-positive strains Proteus, Ñitrobacter spp., spp., Shigella spp., Haemophilus influenzae, Neisseria gonorrhoeae.
Streptococcus spp. (including Streptococcus pneumoniae), Pseudomonas spp., Acinetobacter spp., Clostridium perfingens, Mycoplasma spp., Chlamydia spp are moderately susceptible to Pefloxacin. Pefloxacin does not act on Gram-negative anaerobic bacteria: Spirochaeta spp., Mycobacterium tuberculosis.
Indications: Abaktal is indicated to treat infectious disease caused by susceptible to the prescription microorganisms:
- Kidney and urinary tract infections
- Infection of the small pelvis' organs(prostatis, adnexitis)
- Infection of the low respiratory tract
- ENT infections(chromic sinusitis, severe external otitis)
- Severe infections of the digestive system(enteric fever, salmonellosis)
- Liver and bile-expelling ducts infections.
- Infections of the abdominal cavity(peritonitis)
- Infections of the bones, joints and conjunctive tissue(central osteosis)
- Soft tissue and skin infections
- Infections caused by meningococci
- Sepsis
- Bacterial endocarditis
Contraindications and cautions: You should not use Abaktal in the following conditions:
- Hypersensitivity or to pefloxacin
- Pregnancy
- Breastfeeding
- In children
You should use this medication with caution in any CNS disorders, kidney failure, severe liver failure.
Warning! Avoid direct sun rays while taking this medication.

- Digestive system: decreased appetite, dyspepsia, diarrhea, nausea, taste changes, vomiting
- CNS: headache, nervousness, dizziness, depression, insomnia , tremor
- Urinary tract: crystalluria, hematuria
- Musculoskeletal system: myalgia, arthralgia, tendinitis
- reaction: skin rash, skin itching, hives, photosensibilization

- Abactal increases the effects of the blood thinners.
- Tetracycline and chloramphenicole are less effective in combination with Abaktal
- Antacids reduce the absorption of Abaktal
- Abaktal may enhance the cyclosporine blood levels
- Abaktal increases the effects of theophylline and NSAID's
