Cefazolin exerts bactericidal action due to interfering with the production of peptidoglycan that is essential component in bacterial cell wall. Peptidoglycan serves a structural role making cell wall stable and durable. Insufficiency of peptidoglycan makes bacteria nonviable due to increasing permeability of the cell wall. Cefazolin acts on gram-positive (Staphylococcus spp., Streptococcus spp., Pneumoncoccus, Corynebacterium diphtheriae, B.antracis) and gram-negative bacteria (N.meningitides, N.gonorrhoeae, Shigella, Salmonella, E.coli, Klebsiella). Cefazolin is ineffective against P.aeruginisa, Proteus, M.tuberculosis, anaerobic microorganisms.
