Drug name: Cefazolin

Therapeutic actions: Cefazolin belongs to the first generation cephalosporin antibiotics. Cefazolin exerts bactericidal action due to interfering with the production of peptidoglycan that is essential component in bacterial cell wall. Peptidoglycan serves a structural role making cell wall stable and durable. Insufficiency of peptidoglycan makes bacteria nonviable due to increasing permeability of the cell wall.

Cefazolin acts on gram-positive (Staphylococcus spp., Streptococcus spp., Pneumoncoccus, Corynebacterium diphtheriae, B.antracis) and gram-negative bacteria (N.meningitides, N.gonorrhoeae, Shigella, Salmonella, E.coli, Klebsiella). Cefazolin is ineffective against P.aeruginisa, Proteus, M.tuberculosis, anaerobic microorganisms.

Indications: Cefazolin is indicated in the treatment of infections caused by susceptible to it bacteria:

• Infections of the airways(bronchitis, pneumonia)
• Urinary tract infections(pyelonephritis, cystitis, urethritis, prostatitis)
• Skin and soft tissue infections
• Infections of the biliary tracts
• Infection of the bones and joints
• Endocarditis
• Septic infections
• Prophylaxis of infections while surgical interventions

Contraindications and cautions: Do not use Cephazolin if you experienced allergy or hypersensitivity to Cefazolin or other cephalosporin antibiotics.

Cefazolin should not be used in pregnancy and breastfeeding. It is unappropriated for use in infants.

Talk with your health care provider prior to taking Cefazolin in the following conditions:

• Liver diseases
• Kidney diseases
• Gastrointestinal diseases

Cefazolin may cause false positive results of the glucose determination in the urine.

Adverse effects: There are possible side-effects associated with this medicine that can affect individuals in different ways. If a side effect is stated here, that does not necessarily mean the fact that all people using Cephazolin will experience it or any other.

• Allergic reactions: skin rash and itching, Quencke's edema, anaphylactic shock, arthralgia
• Gastrointestinal disorders: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, pseudomembrane colitis
• In prolonged uses dysbacteriosis, superinfection, candidosis may occur.
