Drug name: Klacid
Active Ingredients:
- Clarithromycin
Therapeutic actions: Klacid contains the active ingredient Clarithromycin that belongs to macrolide antibiotics. Clarithromycin binds to 50S subunits of the Palades' granules and interferes in peptidetranslocase activity resulting in reducing the growth of the bacteria. As a result microorganisms are not able to multiply and then die. In high dosages Clarithromycin possesses bactericidal action. Klacid is a broad spectrum antibiotic that is high effective against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, anaerobic microorganisms, mycobacteria, mycoplasms and spirochetes.
Indications: Klacid is used to treat infectious diseases caused by sensitive to Clarithromycin bacteria:
- Upper respiratory tract infections(pharyngitis and tonsillitis)
- Lower respiratory tract infections(bacterial aggravation of the chronic obstructive pneumonia
- interstitial and alveolar pneumonia, bacterial bronchitis)
- Skin and soft tissue infections(folliculitis, furunculosis, impetigo)
- Otitits media
- Gastric and duodenal ulcer(associated with Helicobacter pylori)
- Mycobacteriosis
- Clamidiosis
Contraindications and cautions: Klacid should not be used in:
- to Clarithromycin or other macrolide-type antibiotics(erythromycin)
- Severe liver damage
- Severe kidney damage
- Abnormal heart rhythm (prolonged QT interval)
- Breastfeeding
Use Clarithromycin with caution in children and pregnancy.
Adverse effects: There are possible side-effects associated with this that can affect individuals in different ways. If a side effect is stated here, that does not necessarily mean the fact that all people using Clarithromycin will experience it or any other.
- Digestive system: diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, indigestion, abdominal pain
- CNS: headache, pain in the muscle or joints, dizziness, sleeping and hearing disorders, confusion,
- Disturbance of taste or smell
- Sore mouth
- Tongue or tooth discoloration
- Thrush
- Liver or kidney dysfunctions
- Arrhythmias
- Headache
- skin reactions
- Dizziness
- Low blood sugar (hypoglycaemia)

- Do not take Clarithromycin in combination with cisapride, pimozide, terfenadine, , ergotamine, dihydroergotamine, Carbamazepine
- Clarithromycin may increase the effects of ciclosporin, colchicine, digoxin, disopyramide, eletriptan, itraconazole, midazolam, phenytoin, quinidine, rifabutin, sirolimus, tacrolimus, tacrolimus, tolterodine, triazolam.
- Clarithromycin may also increase blood levels of the anticoagulants
- Clarithromycin reduces cholesterol-lowering known as statins(simvastatin and lovastatin)
- Ritonavir may increase the blood levels of clarithromycin
- Oral birth control pills becomes less effective while taking clarithromycin
