Active Ingredients:
- Chloramphenicol
Therapeutic actions: Chloramphenicol is bacteriostatic antibiotic that works by inhibiting ribosomal activity and protein synthesis via prevention of the binding of amino acyl-tRNA to the A site on the 50S ribosome subunit. As a result, bacteria become unable to produce proteins essential for the growth and multiplication. Chloramphenicol is effective against some strains of the bacteria that resistant to penicillins, tetracyclines, sulfanilamides. Chloramphenicol is effective against a wide variety of bacteria, including gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria.
Indications: Laevomycetin is indicated to treat infections caused by susceptible to Chloramphenicol bacteria:
- Typhoid fever
- Paratyphoid
- Dysentery
- Brucellosis
- Tularemia
- Whooping cough
- Pneumonia
- Gonorrhea
- Trachoma
- Meningitis
- Sepsis
- Chlamidiosis
- Osteomyelitis
- Furunculosis,
Contraindications and cautions: You should not take laevomycetin in the following conditions:
- Hypersensitivity or allergy to chloramphenicol
- Diseases of the hematopoietic system
- Porphyria
- Severe liver and kidney diseases
- Deficiency of G6PD
- Skin diseases(psoriasis, eczema, fungal infestation)
- Pregnancy
- Breastfeeding
- Children
Regularly control your blood levels while taking Laevomycetin
Avoid alcohol drinking while taking Chloramphenicol
Adverse effects: There are possible side-effects associated with this medicine that can affect individuals in different ways. If a side effect is stated here, that does not necessarily mean the fact that all people using chloramphenicol will experience it or any other.
- The most common side effects include: nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, irritation of the mucous linings, liver dysfunction, trombocytopenia, agranulocytosis, anemia, dysbacteriosis,
- In rare cases:headache, depression, confusion of consciousness, locomotor disorders, paralysis of the eyeballs, taste changes, allergic reactions(skin rash, hives, Quinke's edema, collapse).

The following drugs may last longer than expected if used concurrently with chloramphenicol:
- Phenytoin (used for both heart disease and for seizures)
- Primidone (used for seizures)
- Phenobarbital (used for seizures)
- Cyclophosphamide (used in chemotherapy)
The use of phenobarbital may reduce the effectiveness of chloramphenicol.The use of chloramphenicol may interfere with vaccinations.
