Drug name: Macropen
Active Ingredients:
- Midecamycin
Therapeutic actions: Midecamycin belongs to macrolide antibiotic. It works by binding to 50S subunits of the ribosomes and disturbs the peptidetranslocase activity resulting in reducing the growth of the microorganisms. As a result, bacteria are not able to replicate and then die. In high dosages Midecamycin possesses bactericidal action. Macropen is a broad spectrum antibiotic that is highly effective against Gram-positive( Streptococcus spp., Streptococcus pneumoniae, Staphylococcus spp., Corynebacterium diphtheriae, Listeria monocytogenes, Erysipelothrix spp., Clostridium spp) and Gram-negative bacteria( Neisseria spp., Bordetella pertussis, Helicobacter spp., Campylobacter spp., Moraxella catarrhalis, Bacteroides spp). Macropen also acts on Ureaplasma urealyticum, Mycoplasma hominis, Mycoplasma pneumoniae, Chlamydia trachomatis, Chlamydophila pneumoniae, Legionella pneumophila.
Indications: Macropen is used to treat infectious diseases caused by susceptible to midecamycin bacteria:
- Respiratory system infections
- Infections of the urogenital system
- Skin and soft tissue infections
- Enteritis caused by ampylobacter
Treatment and prophylaxis of diphtheria and pertussis.
Contraindications and cautions: You should not use Macropen if any of the following conditions apply to you:
- Increased sensitivity to midecamycin or other macrolides
- liver diseases(liver cirrhosis, liver failure)
- Pregnancy
- Breastfeeding
Macropen should not be used in acute respiratory viral infection.

- Digestive system: decreased appetite, stomatitis, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea.

Macropen reduces the elimination of ciclosporin, warfarine
Macropen lowers the metabolism of the following medications:
- Secale cornutum alkaloids(ergotamine, dehydroergotamine)
- Carbamazepine
