Therapeutic actions: Nitroxoline belongs to 8-hydroxyquinoline antibacterial medication. Nitroxoline works by inhibiting the synthesis of the bacterial DNA(genetic material). Nitroxoline binds to metallic enzymes of the bacterial cell resulting in inactivation of their function. Bacteria are not able to produce DNA without these enzymes and then die. Nitroxoline acts on Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. It also effective against some yeasts.

Indications: Nitroxoline is used to treat urinary tract infections: pyelonephritis, cistitis, urethritis, epididymitis.

Contraindications and cautions: Do not use this medication in:

  • Peripheral nervous system disorders
  • Optic nerve diseases
  • Liver failure
  • G6PD insufficiency
