Drug name: Rocephin

Active Ingredients: Ceftriaxone

Therapeutic actions: Rocephin contains the active ingredient ceftriaxone. It is a group of antibiotics called the cephalosporins. Rocephin kills bacteria by inhibiting the ability of bacteria to form cell walls. Therefore the bacteria break up and die. Ceftriaxone is used as injection or infusion, and is generally used to treat severe infections.

Indications: Ceftriaxone is used to treat many different types of bacterial infections such as bronchitis, pneumonia, blood infections, bone and joint infections, meningitis, abdominal infections, skin infections, ear infections, gonorrhea, pelvic inflammatory disease, and urinary tract infections.

Contraindications and cautions:
You should not use Rocephin in:

• allergy to cephalosporin or to a penicillin antibiotics
• Children or babies with jaundice
• Low albumin blood levels
• Life long blood disorders which can cause a variety of conditions, including mental health problems (porphyrias)

You should talk with your health care provider prior to taking Rocephin in:

• kidney disorders;
• liver disorders;
• gallbladder problems;
• bleeding or blood clotting problems;
• stomach disease
• pregnancy
• breastfeeding

Adverse effects: There are possible side-effects associated with this medicine that can affect individuals in different ways. If a side effect is stated here, that does not necessarily mean the fact that all people using Ceftriaxone will experience it or any other.

• an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; closing of the throat; swelling of the lips, face, or tongue; hives; or a rash);
• rash, redness, or itching
• unusual bleeding or bruising
• mucous or blood in the stool;
• severe nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea
• Other, less serious side effects may be more likely to appear:
• yeast infection of the mouth or vagina; or pain or tenderness at the injection site
• mild nausea or diarrhea

Especially pay attention to the following drugs:

• probenecid (Benemid)
• another antibiotic
• diuretics such as furosemide, bumetanide (Bumex), torsemide (Demadex), or ethacrynic acid (Edecrin)
• warfarin (Coumadin)
