Drug name: Trikaxon
Active Ingredients:
- Ceftriaxone
Therapeutic actions: Ceftriaxone belongs to a group of called the cephalosporins. They kill bacteria by interfering with the ability of bacteria to form cell walls. The bacteria therefore break up and die. Ceftriaxone is given by injection or infusion, and is generally used for severe infections.
Indications: Ceftriaxone injection is used to treat certain infections caused by bacteria such as (a sexually transmitted disease), pelvic inflammatory disease (infection of the female reproductive organs that may cause infertility), meningitis (infection of the membranes that surround the brain and spinal cord), and infections of the lungs, ears, skin, urinary tract, blood, bones, joints, and abdomen. Ceftriaxone injection is also sometimes given before certain types of surgery to prevent infections that may develop after the operation.
antibiotic will not work for colds, flu, or other viral infections.
Contraindications and cautions: Before using ceftriaxone:
- Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are to it; or to other cephalosporins; or to penicillins; or if you have any other allergies.
- gallbladder disease
- kidney disease
- liver disease
- stomach/intestinal diseases (e.g., colitis).
- Ceftriaxone is not recommended for use in newborns with high blood bilirubin levels.
- Tell your doctor if you are pregnant before using this medication.
- This medication passes into breast milk and may have undesirable effects on a nursing infant. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.
- Swelling, redness, pain, or soreness at the injection site may occur. This medication may also infrequently cause loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or headache. If any of these effects persist or worsen, tell your doctor or pharmacist promptly.
- Remember that your doctor has prescribed this medication because he or she has judged that the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects. Many people using this medication do not have serious side effects.
- Tell your doctor immediately if any of these rare but very serious side effects occur: dark urine, easy bruising/bleeding, fast/pounding/irregular heartbeat, seizures, unusual weakness, yellowing eyes/skin, change in the amount of urine, chest pain, trouble breathing.
- This medication may rarely cause a severe intestinal condition (pseudomembranous colitis) due to a type of resistant bacteria. This condition may occur during treatment or weeks to months after treatment has stopped. Tell your doctor immediately if you develop: persistent diarrhea, abdominal or stomach pain/cramping, blood/mucus in your stool.
- Do not use anti-diarrhea products or narcotic pain if you have any of these because these products may make them worse.
- Use of this medication for prolonged or repeated periods may result in oral thrush or a new vaginal yeast infection. Contact your doctor if you notice white patches in your mouth, a change in vaginal discharge, or other new symptoms.
- A very serious allergic reaction to this is rare. However, seek immediate medical attention if you notice any of the following symptoms of a serious allergic reaction: rash, itching, swelling, severe dizziness, trouble breathing.

If you are injecting ceftriaxone at home, your healthcare provider will give you detailed instructions on how and where to inject the medication. If you do not understand these directions, do not attempt to inject the medication. Contact your healthcare provider for further instructions.
Do not use any ceftriaxone that is discolored, has particles in it, or looks different from your previous doses. Throw away any unused ceftriaxone after the amount of time determined by your pharmacist or doctor.
Dispose of used needles and syringes in a puncture resistant container out of the reach of children.

Interactions: It is important to tell your doctor or pharmacist what medicines you are already taking, including those bought without a prescription and medicines, before you start treatment with this medicine. Similarly, check with your doctor or pharmacist before taking any new medicines while taking this one, to ensure that the combination is safe.
Especially pay attention to the following drugs: aminoglycoside antibiotics (e.g., tobramycin, gentamicin), "blood thinners" (e.g., warfarin), chloramphenicol, live bacterial vaccines.
Avoid giving any products that contain calcium (including solutions given by vein such as Ringer's solution, Hartmann's solution, parenteral nutrition) for 48 hours before, during, or 48 hours after treatment with ceftriaxone. When calcium is given within 48 hours of ceftriaxone, it can cause serious problems in the lungs/kidneys.
This medication may decrease the effectiveness of combination-type birth control pills. This can result in pregnancy. Ask your doctor or pharmacist for details. Discuss whether you should use additional reliable birth control methods while using this medication.
This medication may interfere with certain medical/laboratory tests (e.g., urine glucose tests), possibly causing false test results. Make sure laboratory personnel and all your doctors know you use this drug.
Additional Information: DO NOT SHARE THIS MEDICINE with others. DO NOT USE THIS MEDICINE for other health conditions. KEEP THIS PRODUCT, as well as syringes and needles, if needed during treatment, out of the reach of children. Do not reuse needles, syringes, or other materials.
