Drug name: Nizoral
Active Ingredients:
ketoconazole
Therapeutic actions: Nizoral has an active ingredient ketoconazole. Nizoral is a type of drug called an antifungal. It works by interfering with yeasts and fungi cell membranes. Nizoral stops the fungi from producing a substance called ergosterol. Ergosterol is an essential component of fungal cell membranes. The decreased production of ergosterol causes holes to appear in cell membrane of fungi and this kills them .
Indications: Nizoral tablets are used to treat:
- infections of the skin, mucous membranes, mouth or throat caused by candida
- vaginal thrush (candidiasis)
- pityrosporum folliculitis
- dermatophytosis.
- vaginal yeast infections
Contraindications and cautions:
You should not use Nizoral :
- if you have liver disease.
- if you have an allergy to ketoconazole or to other antifungals.
- if you have blood disorders called porphyrias.
- If you are breastfeeding.
- If you are pregnant.
- if you are going to treat children weighing under 15kg.
- if you have rare problems of galactose intolerance, the Lapp lactase deficiency or glucose-galactose malabsorption.
- if you have underactivity of the adrenal glands.
- if you taking large amount of Alcohol.
Warning!
- You should tale Nizoral tablets with a meal.
- Your health care provider should monitor your liver function during the treatment with Nizoral
- You should complete you treatment till the end even if you begin to feel better.
Adverse effects: There are possible side-effects associated with this medicine that can affect individuals in different ways. If a side effect is stated here, that does not necessarily mean the fact that all people using Nizoral will experience it or any other.
- Nausea and vomiting.
- Itching (pruritus).
- Abdominal pain.
- Diarrhoea.
- Headache.
- Dizziness.
- Sleepiness.
- Rash.
In very rare cases you can experience such side effects:
- Menstrual disorders
- Erectile dysfunction
- Serious liver disorders
- Underactivity of the adrenal glands
- Abnormal enlargement of breasts in men (gynaecomastia)
- Decreased numbers of blood cells called platelets in the blood (thrombocytopenia)
- alopecia
- Raised pressure inside the skull
- Severe swelling of lips, face or tongue (angioedema)
- Serious liver damage

- alprazolam (Xanax);
- anticoagulants ('blood thinners') such as warfarin (Coumadin);
- buspirone (Buspar);
- tamoxifen (Nolvadex); telithromycin (Ketek); trazodone (Desyrel); vincristine (Vincasar)
- cyclosporine (Neoral, Sandimmune);
- diazepam (Valium); digoxin (Lanoxin);
- erythromycin (E.E.S., E-Mycin, Erythrocin);
- HIV protease inhibitors such as indinavir (Crixivan), ritonavir (Norvir), and saquinavir (Invirase, Fortovase);
- medications for erectile dysfunction such as sildenafil (Viagra), tadalafil (Cialis) and vardenafil (Levitra);
- loratadine (Claritin);
- calcium channel blockers such as amlodipine (Norvasc), diltiazem (Cardizem, Dilacor, Tiazac), felodipine (Plendil), nifedipine (Adalat, Procardia), nisoldipine (Sular),and verapamil (Calan, Covera, Isoptin, Verelan);clarithromycin (Biaxin);
- medications for diabetes;
- methadone (Dolophine); methylprednisolone (Medrol);
- midazolam (Versed); phenytoin (Dilantin); pimozide (Orap); quinidine (Quinidex, Quinaglute); quinine; tacrolimus (Prograf);
