Terbisil

Terbisil

Drug name: Terbisil

Other names used:

  • LamisilĀ®
  • Lamisil ATĀ®

Active Ingredients: terbinafine

Therapeutic actions: Like other allylamines, terbinafine inhibits ergosterol synthesis by inhibiting squalene epoxidase, an enzyme that is part of the fungal cell wall synthesis pathway (NB: the fungal cell wall, not the cell membrane). In layman's terms, it inhibits fungal and bacterial cell wall growth, causing the contents of the cell to be unprotected and eventually die.

Indications: Terbisil is a broad-spectrum antifungal. At low concentrations Terbisil is active against dermatophytes, moulds and certain dimorphic fungi. The activity against yeasts is fungicidal and fungistatic depending on the species. Terbisil is used in the treatment of fungal infections sensitive to terbinafine such as Tinea corporis, Tinea cruris and Tinea pedis (caused by dermatophytes) and also in the treatment of onchomycosis (terbinafine-sensitive fungal infection of the nails) caused by dermatophytes.

Contraindications and cautions: Tell your prescriber or health care professional if your symptoms do not improve after 3 days. Some fungal infections can take a long time to clear completely so finish your prescribed course.

Do not get terbinafine cream, gel, or solution in your eyes, mouth, or nose; if you do, rinse with plenty of cool tap water.

After bathing, make sure that your skin is dry. Most types of fungus live in moist environments. Wear clean socks and clothing every day.

Adverse effects: Side effects while using terbinafine cream, gel, or topical solution are rare. Side effects that you should report to your prescriber or health care professional as soon as possible:
- skin rash, itching
- blistering, increased redness, peeling, or swelling of the skin or mouth

Side effects that usually do not require medical attention (report to your prescriber or health care professional if they continue or are bothersome):
- burning or stinging
- dryness
- skin irritation

Interactions: Other skin products may affect the action of terbinafine. Do not use any other skin products on the affected area without consulting your prescriber or health care professional.

Additional Information: DO NOT SHARE THIS MEDICINE with others. DO NOT USE THIS MEDICINE for other health conditions. KEEP THIS PRODUCT, as well as syringes and needles, if needed during treatment, out of the reach of children. Do not reuse needles, syringes, or other materials.
