Drug name: Valtrex
The commercial name of the medication may differ from the brand one. Generic Valtrex manufactured by Cipla is available under commercial name Valcivir.
Therapeutic actions: Valtrex is antiviral remedy. Valtrex contains the active ingredients valacyclovir that after hepatic metabolism is turned into acyclovir. However, the bioavailability reaches nearly 55%. Valtrex possesses specific inhibiting activity against Herpes simplex type 1 and 2, Varicella zoster, Epstein-Barr virus. Valtrex works by inhibiting the synthesis of viral DNA resulting making viral unable to multiply.
Indications: Valtrex is indicated in the following conditions:
- Shingles (herpes zoster)
- Chickenpox.
- Cold sores (herpes labialis)
- Genital herpes
- Cytomegalovirus
- Epstein-Barr virus
- Prophylaxis of Cytomegalovirus disease that may follow organ transplantation.
Contraindications and cautions: Valtrex should not be used in the following conditions:
- Known hypersensitivity or allergy to any of the medication active ingredients( acyclovir or valacyclovir)
- Impaired immune system
- Dehydration
- Concomitant HIV/AIDS treatment
- Dehydration
- Bone marrow transplantation
- Kidney diseases
- Depression
Valtrex does not prevent the spread of herpes and it is advised to wash your hands thoroughly before and after each meal.

- CNS: Hallucinations, anxiety, aggression, confusion, vision and speech problems, unusual weakness

- Other: nasal congestion, sore throat weight gain, pail yellow skin, dark urine

- Cancer treatment tretionin, oxaliplatin, carmustine, cisplatin and others
- Organ transplant medicine like sirolimus, tacrolimus
- Ulcer medicine mesalamine, sulfasalazine
- Last generation antibiotics like amphotericin B, amikacin, bacitracin, kanamycin, vancomycin
