Drug name: Ketotifen syrup

Therapeutic actions: Ketotifen possesses antihistamine and antiserotonin properties. Therapeutic effect of Ketotifen is associated with the ability of the preparation to stabilize membrane of the mast cell. The drug inhibits the release of histamine and other inflammatory mediators. By blocking H1-histamine receptors Ketotifen lowers the effects of histamine as well. Ketotifen inhibits the enzyme phosphodiesterase and ,thus, increases the level of cyclic adenosine-5'-monophosphate in the mast cells. In bronchial asthma ketotifen does not stop asthmatic attack, however, lowers their number, duration and intensity.
Indications: Ketotifen is used in:
- Prophylaxis of bronchial asthma, allergic bronchitis, asthmatic complications in hay fever
- Prophylaxis of allergic rhinitis
- Prophylaxis and treatment o allergic dermatosis.
Contraindications and cautions: Ketotifen syrup should not be used in
- Hypersensitivity to Ketotifen
- Pregnancy
- Breastfeeding

- Ketotifen in conjunction with corticosteroids increases the risk of adrenal insufficiency development.
- Oral anti-diabetic drugs in combination with Ketotifen may cause thrombocytopenia
- Sedative, somnific and antihistamine drugs and alcohol enhances the effects of Ketotifen.
