Ventolin
Active Ingredients:
Salbutamol
Therapeutic actions:Ventolin inhaler contains the active ingredient salbutamol, which is a type of medicine known as a short-acting beta 2 agonist. It works by acting on receptors in the lungs called beta 2 receptors. When salbutamol stimulates these receptors it causes the muscles to relax in the airways . This allows the airways to open.
Indications:
Ventolin is used to treat:
- Asthma
- Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
Contraindications and cautions:
You should not use this medicine in:
Known sensitivity or allergy to salbutamol
You should talk with your health care provider prior to taking this medication:
- Diabetes
- Hyperthyroidism
- arrhythmias
- Heart disease
- hypertension
- arrhythmias
Adverse effects: There are possible side-effects associated with this medicine that can affect individuals in different ways. If a side effect is stated here, that does not necessarily mean the fact that all people using Ventolin will experience it or any other.
- Shaking, usually of the hands (tremor)
- Nervous tension
- Headache
- Muscle cramps
- Low blood potassium level (hypokalaemia)
- Faster than normal heart beat (tachycardia)
- Awareness of your heart beat (heart palpitations)
- paradoxical bronchospasm

Especially pay attention to the following drugs:
- a beta-blocker :metoprolol (Lopressor, Toprol XL), propranolol (Inderal), acebutolol (Sectral), bisoprolol (Zebeta), carteolol (Cartrol), carvedilol (Coreg), labetalol (Normodyne, Trandate), nadolol (Corgard), or pindolol (Visken); atenolol (Tenormin).
- a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) such as isocarboxazid (Marplan), phenelzine (Nardil), or tranylcypromine (Parnate);
- a tricyclic Antidepressant : clomipramine (Anafranil), desipramine (Norpramin), imipramine (Tofranil), or protriptyline (Vivactil amitriptyline (Elavil), doxepin (Sinequan), nortriptyline (Pamelor), amoxapine (Asendin);
- another oral or inhaled bronchodilator;
- caffeine, diet pills, or decongestants.
