Bad cholesterol are deposited onto arteries walls, forming atherosclerotic plaques. It decreases elasticity and blood flow is reduced. Sometimes atherosclerotic plaques can disengage and block the vessels, causing heart attack or stroke. HDL or good cholesterol protects our body form atherosclerosis.
