Drug name: Atorec
Therapeutic actions: Atorec contains the active ingredient Atorvastatin that belongs to the group of medications called HMG CoA reductase inhibitors. By inhibiting the enzyme HMG-CoA reductase, Atorvastin lowers the production of cholesterol in the liver cells. This stimulates cholesterol uptake in the blood and breakdown in the livers. All of these results in lowering high cholesterol levels.
Indications: Atorec is used in the following conditions:
- High triglycerides levels
- High cholesterol (hypercholesterolemia) levels
- Prevention of cardiovascular diseases
Contraindications and cautions:
You should not use Atorec if any of the following conditions apply to you:
- Individual intolerance to Atorvastatin
- Liver diseases, including heart failure
- Pregnancy
- Breastfeeding
- High results in liver functions tests
- Glucose-galactose malabsorption
- History of muscular affects caused by statin and fibrate taking
Let your doctor know if you experience the following conditions:
- Elderly age
- Kidney disorders
- Drinking too much alcoholic beverages
- Hypothyroidism
- Hereditary muscle disorders
- Haemorrhagic stroke
Warning!
- You should continue following a cholesterol-lowering diet during treatment with atorvastatin calcium. Talk with your doctor.
- You must avoid drinking grapefruit juice while taking atorvastatin. Grapefruit juice can affect the metabolism of Atorec and could increase the amount of the medicine in your blood, thus increasing the risk of side effects.
- You should tell your health care immediately if you experience any muscular manifestations such as , tenderness, cramps, pain or weakness while taking atorvastatin.
- Atorvastatin application may be associated with a type of lung disease. That's why you should tell your health care provider if you experience shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, a non-productive cough and deterioration in your general health (eg. weight loss, fever, fatigue).
Adverse effects: There are possible side-effects associated with this medicine that can affect individuals in different ways. If a side effect is stated here, that does not necessarily mean the fact that all people using Atorvastatin will experience it or any other.
- The most common side effects include: diarrhea, insomnia, joint pain, dizziness, respiratory infection, sore throat
- The less common side effects include: tenderness, lack of energy, fever, swelling of the extremities, stomach pain, nausea, hives, rash, bleedings, chest pain, difficulty breathing or swallowing, hoarseness,painful urination.

Atorec may interact with the following medications:
- cyclosporine (Sandimmune, Neoral);
- gemfibrozil (Lopid), clofibrate (Atromid-S), or fenofibrate (Tricor);
- niacin (Nicolar, Nicobid, Slo-Niacin, others);
- erythromycin (E-Mycin, E.E.S., Ery-Tab, others) or clarithromycin (Biaxin);
- cholestyramine (Questran) or colestipol (Colestid);
- hormonal birth control (pills, patches, or implants); or
- antifungal medication such as itraconazole (Sporanox), fluconazole (Diflucan), or ketoconazole (Nizoral).
