Active Ingredients:
fenofibrate
Therapeutic actions: Lipicard tablets contain the active ingredient fenofibrate. It is a type of medicine called a fibrate. Fenofibrate is used to dicrease the levels of fats (lipids) called Cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood.
Fenofibrate stimulates the action of an enzyme that breaks down triglycerides and LDL cholesterol.
Fenofibrate increases levels of HDL(good) cholesterol. The common effect is reduced levels of "bad fats" and increased levels of "good fats" in the blood.
Indications:
Fenofibrate is used :
- to decrease levels of cholesterol in patients with hypercholesterolemia
- to decrease levels of triglycerides in patients with hypertriglyceridemia. High level of triglycerides in the body increases the risk for developing a condition known as pancreatitis
Contraindications and cautions:
You should not use fenofibrate in:
- allergy to fenofibrate
- Children.
- Kidney insufficiency.
- Liver insufficiency.
- Liver damage occurring due to disorder of the bile ducts (biliary cirrhosis).
- Gall bladder disease.
- pancreatitis, except when this is a result of very high triglyceride levels (hypertriglyceridaemia).
- Allergy to peanut (arachis) oil, soya lecithin or related products.
- Galactose intolerance, the Lapp lactase deficiency or glucose-galactose malabsorption
- Pregnancy.
- Breastfeeding.
- People who experience a skin reaction to UV light while taking other fibrate medicines or ketoprofen.
You should talk with your health care provider prior to taking fenofibrate in:
- hypothyroidism.
- Low levels of the protein albumin in the blood (hypoalbuminaemia).
- History of muscle disorders.
- People who drink alcohol.
- Elderly people.
Fenofibrate side effects: There are possible side-effects associated with this medicine that can affect individuals in different ways. If a side effect is stated here, that does not necessarily mean the fact that all people using fenofibrate will experience it or any other.
- gas
- fatigue
- headache
- stomach pain
- upset stomach
- runny nose
- dizziness
- constipation
If you notice any of the following symptoms, call your health care provider immediately:
- muscle pain or tenderness
- joint pain
- infection
- rash
- weakness
- flu-like symptoms

Especially pay attention to the following drugs:
- anticoagulants ('blood thinners') such as warfarin (Coumadin);
- cyclosporine (Sandimmune, Neoral)
- HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors (cholesterol-lowering agents) such as lovastatin (Mevacor), pravastatin (Pravachol), and simvastatin (Zocor);
- cholestyramine (Questran);
Additional Information: DO NOT SHARE fenofibrate with others. DO NOT USE THIS MEDICINE for other health conditions. KEEP THIS PRODUCT, as well as syringes and needles, if needed during treatment, out of the reach of children. Do not reuse needles, syringes, or other materials.
