Omacor
Drug name: Omacor
Active Ingredients:
- omega-3-acid ethyl esters
Therapeutic actions: Omacor capsules contain omega-3-acid ethyl esters(eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). They are more commonly known as omega-3 fatty acids. Omacor also contains alpha-tocopherol (vitamin E).
Omega-3 fatty acids are essential fatty acids, which means they need to be obtained from food because the body cannot produce them. They have various protective effects on the heart and blood circulation.
Omacor (omega-3 fatty acids) decreases the production of 'bad fats', called triglycerides, in the liver. High levels of triglycerides can cause heart disorders and of the pancreas (pancreatitis).
Omacor also reduces the production of a substance called thromboxane. Reducing its production therefore reduces the risk of heart attacks.
Indications:Omacor is used to :
- to treat high triglyceride levels in the blood (hypertriglyceridaemia)
- to reduce the risk of further heart attacks and improving general survival following a heart attack
Contraindications and cautions: You should not use Omacor if:
- you have an to omega-3-acid ethyl esters
You should talk with your health care provider prior to taking Omacor if:
- you have decreased liver function
- you have the risk of bleeding due to surgery, injury or disease
- you are taking to prevent blood clotting (anticoagulants, eg warfarin)
- you are going to treat children
- Your doctor should regularly monitor your liver while taking Omacor
Omacor side effects: There are possible side-effects associated with this medicine that can affect individuals in different ways. If a side effect is stated here, that does not necessarily mean the fact that all people using Omacor capsules will experience it or any other.
- Constipation
- Diarrhoea
- Swelling of abdomen
- Nausea and vomiting
- Eczema
- Acne
- Burping or belching
- Smell or taste of fish
