Drug name: Bronchosan
Therapeutic actions: Bronchosan promotes healthy respiratory system and lung function, supports the natural cleansing action in the lungs and trachea, gentle soothing effect on the throat, efficacy supported by a clinical study, holistically standardized to whole plant. This exclusive formula combines Ivy, Thyme and Licorice with the essential oils of Anise and Eucalyptus to promote throat and lung health by supporting the natural cleansing action in the lungs and windpipe. Bronchosan also supports the normal production and liquification of mucus.

Indications: Bronchosan is a mucolytic agent used in the treatment of respiratory disorders (eg. cough with phlegm) associated with viscid or excessive mucus.

Bronchosan supports the body's own natural mechanisms for clearing mucus from the respiratory tract.

This medication is a secretolytic, which means that it increases the production of serous mucus in the respiratory tract and makes the phlegm thinner and less sticky. This contributes to a secretomotoric effect: it helps the cilia - tiny hairs that line the respiratory tract - to transport the phlegm out of the lungs.

Contraindications and cautions: Do not use Bronchosan if you are allergic to this medication or to any of the other ingredients in Bromhexine, Bisolvon®, for example. If you are not sure if you have these allergies, you should raise those concerns with your doctor or pharmacist.

Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have, or have had, any of the following conditions: liver problems, kidney problems, or stomach ulcers. If you are not sure if you have, or have had, any of these conditions, you should raise those concerns with your doctor or pharmacist.

Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, obtained with or without a doctor's prescription. Bromhexine may increase the amount of antibiotic penetration.

Ask for your doctor's advice if you are pregnant, or likely to become pregnant during your course of medication. Special care is recommended during pregnancy. The benefits of bromhexine medications must be assessed against possible effects on your child.

Ask for your doctor's advice if you are breastfeeding, or likely to breastfeed during your course of medication. This medication is expected to pass into breast milk, therefore it is not recommended that bromhexine be taken by women who are breastfeeding.

Adverse effects: Occasional, mild side effects from this medication may include:

• nausea
• diarrhoea
• indigestion
• a feeling of fullness in the stomach (a bloated feeling)

Very rarely, serious allergic reactions have occurred with the use of bromhexine. Symptoms of allergic reactions may include:

• skin rashes
• difficulty in breathing
• swelling of the face, lips, mouth, tongue or throat which may cause difficulty
• swallowing or breathing

Interactions: There are no observed significant interactions with other medicines.
