Ambroxol
Therapeutic actions: Ambroxol is a strong expectorant. It enables sticky phlegm to be removed from the respiratory tract faster and more easily by enhancing the bronchial secretions that loosen congested phlegm. Ambroxol also releases and strengthens the cilia (tiny striking hairs inside the windpipe and bronchial tubes), which can then expel the abnormal phlegm with their conveyor-belt like action.
Ambroxol increases the body's production of surfactant, a substance that promotes the clearance mechanism for germs or other pathogens, which helps to overcome infection in the bronchi.
Furthermore, ambroxol has been shown to have local anesthetic properties which contribute to the soothing effect of the syrup.
Indications: Ambroxol is used with acute and chronic diseases of upper respiratory tracts concomitant with formation of viscous and hardly separated expectoration, for therapy of asthmatic bronchitis, bronchial asthma with hard expectoration elimination, bronchiectatic disease, chronic pneumonia, inflammatory diseases of rhinopharyngeal tracts (laryngitis, pharyngitis, sinusitis and rhinitis).
