Active Ingredients:
Metformin
Therapeutic actions: Metformin reduces hepatic gluconeogenesis, decreases absorption of glucose from the gastrointestinal tract and increases peripheral utilization of glucose.
Indications: Metformin is used to treat Diabetes mellitus type 2 along with other medications (Insulin, glibenclamide, rosiglitazone)
Contraindications and cautions: Several conditions may develop when using metformin be sure to ask your health provider regarding the possible symptoms and treatment for them. These conditions include:
- Lacticacidosis
- Hypoglycemia
- Hyperglycemia
Be sure to mention to your health provider if any of the following apply to you:
- Congestive heart failure or a history of hear disease
- allergy to metformin
- Kidney disease or kidney failure
- Diabetic ketoacidosis
- Liver disease
Metformine is in FDA pregnancy category B. Meaning that it is not expected to be harmful to an unborn baby however it should not given to children younger than 10 years old. If you are breastfeeding be sure to consult your doctor if it is possible for you to use metformin.
Adverse effects: There are possible side-effects associated with this medicine that can affect individuals in different ways. If a side effect is stated here, that does not necessarily mean the fact that all people using metformin will experience it or any other.
Be sure to ask your doctor how to treat the following conditions which can develop when using metformine:
- hypoglycemia
- hyperglycemia
- diabetic ketoacidosis

- gas
- sneezing
- unpleasant metallic taste in mouth
- heartburn
- headache
- flushing of the skin
- constipation
- cough
- runny nose
- nail changes
- bloating

Especially mention to your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking or have taken the following medications: acyclovir; acetaminophen; aminoglycoside antibiotics such as amikacin, gentamicin, Kanamycin, Neomycin, netilmycin, paramomycin, streptomycin and tobramycin; amphotericin B; ACE inhibitors such as benazepril, captopril, enalapril, fosinopril, lisinopril, moexipril, perindopril, quinapril, ramipril, and trandolapril; aspirin and other NSAIDs such as ibuprofen and naproxen; cancer chemotherapy medications; cyclosporine; dapsone; diuretics; foscarnet; gold compounds such as auranofin, aurothioglucose, and gold sodium thiomalate; hydralazine; lithium; medications to treat HIV or AIDS; methicillin; nitrates; penicillin and sulfa antibiotics; penicillamine; primaquine; propranolol; rifampin; tacrolimus; vancomycin; or if you have ever taken the Chinese weight-loss herb aristolochia.
