Drug name: Actos

Other names used: Pioglitazone, Pioglar, Glustin

Active Ingredients: pioglitazone hydrochloride

Therapeutic actions:

Hypoglycemic. Selectively stimulates nuclear gamma receptors activated by gamma-PPAR. Modulates the transcription of genes sensitive to insulin and participating in the control of blood glucose and lipid metabolism in adipose tissue, muscular tissue and liver. Does not not stimulate insulin incretion. Lowers insulin resistance of peripheral tissues and liver, increases the consumption of insulin-responsive glucose, reduces the glucose release from the liver, reduces level of glucose, insulin, and glycated hemoglobin in the blood. In patients with impaired lipid metabolism reduces triglycerides and increases HDL without changing LDL and total cholesterol levels.

Indications:

Diabetes mellitus type 2

Contraindications and cautions:

  • Insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (type 1)
  • diabetic ketoacidosis
  • acute liver disease
  • ALT level exceeding the norm
  • pregnancy, breast feeding
  • hypersensitivity
