Active Ingredients:
furosemide
Therapeutic actions: Lasix injection or tablets contain the active ingredient furosemide. It is a type of drug called a loop diuretic. It works by increasing the production of urine, therefore the amount of fluid in the body is decreased. Removing fluid from the blood vessels helps to decrease the pressure within the blood vessels.
Indications: Lasix is used :
- to reduce excess fluid in the body caused by congestive heart failure, lung disease, liver disease, or kidney disorders( kidney failure).
Contraindications and cautions:
You should not use Lasix :
- if you have an allergy to furosemide
- if you have low volume of circulating blood (hypovolaemia).
- in people who are unconscious due to liver disease affecting the brain (hepatic encephalopathy).
- If you have very low blood potassium levels (hypokalaemia).
- If you have Kidney failure causing no urine to be produced (anuria).
- If you have dehydration.
- If you have Kidney failure caused by poisoning with liver or kidney damaging agents.
- If you have Kidney failure in people unconscious due to end-stage liver disease (hepatic coma).
- If you have very low blood sodium levels (hyponatraemia).
- If you have an allergy to sulphonamides, eg the antibiotic sulfamethoxazole.
- In pregnancy
- In Breastfeeding.
You should talk with your health care provider prior to taking Lasix if you experience any of these conditions:
- kidney disorders.
- liver disorders.
- difficulty passing urine.
- Enlarged prostate gland .
- hypotension.
- Diabetes.
- Gout.
- Premature babies.
- Elderly people
- Low amounts of protein in the blood
Adverse effects: There are possible side-effects associated with this medicine that can affect individuals in different ways. If a side effect is stated here, that does not necessarily mean the fact that all people using Lasix will experience it or any other.
- an allergic reaction such as closing of the throat, swelling of the lips, tongue, or face, hives, difficulty breathing
- muscle cramps or weakness
- low blood pressure (weakness, dizziness, fatigue)
- an irregular heartbeat
- abdominal pain or diarrhea
- hearing disorders
- dry mouth or increased thirst
- easy bleeding or bruising
- numbness in the hands or feet
- headache
- dizziness
- constipation
- increased sensitivity to sunlight
- a rash
- nausea
- yellow skin or eyes
- ringing in the ears

Especially pay attention to the following drugs:
- probenecid (Benemid)
- a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) such as ketoprofen (Orudis, Orudis KT, Oruvail), indomethacin (Indocin), diclofenac (Cataflam, Voltaren),ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil, Nuprin), naproxen (Naprosyn, Anaprox, Aleve), etodolac (Lodine), nabumetone (Relafen), oxaprozin (Daypro), piroxicam (Feldene), sulindac (Clinoril), tolmetin (Tolectin), fenoprofen (Nalfon), ketorolac (Toradol), or flurbiprofen (Ansaid)
- a Diabetes medication such as glipizide (Glucotrol), glyburide (Micronase, Glynase, Diabeta), chlorpropamide (Diabinese), tolazamide (Tolinase), tolbutamide (Orinase).
- lithium (Lithobid, Eskalith, others)
