Drug name: Sofradex

Active Ingredients:

dexamethasone,
framycetin,
gramicidin

Therapeutic actions: Dexamethasone belongs to a type of drugs, known as corticosteroids, that are used to reduce eye inflammation(redness, irritations,swelling or burning of the eye). Dexamethasone interacts with specific protein receptors, regulating the expression of the corticoid- dependant genes. It also works by stabilizing the lysosomal ferments, inhibiting the mitosis and migration of leukocytes. As a result the number of chemicals that are important in inflammation precess is decreased.

Framycetin sulphate is an aminoglycosid antibiotic. Framycetin works by binding to proteins structure of the bacteria's cells. As a result, bacteria start to produce the abnormal proteins. The production of these abnormal proteins is ultimately fatal for the bacteria.

Gramicidin is also an antibacterial medicine. Gramicidin exerts bacteriostatic and in the high doses bactericidal action. It works by increasing the permeability of the bacterial cell for the inorganic cations due to building the network of channels in the lipid structures of the membrane. This ,in its turn, causes the development of the osmotic instability of cell.

Indications: Sofradex is used to prevent and treat inflammation of the eye caused by bacteria . Eye inflammation involves the following conditions:

Conjunctivitis
Blepharitis
Infected eczema of the eyelid
Sty
Keratitis
Scleritis
Iridocyclite
Iritis
Allergic conjunctivitis

Contraindications and cautions: You should not use Sofradex:

if you have an allergy to any of Sofradex ingredients
if you have eye infection that produces pus
if you have eye infection caused by fungi
if you suffer from glaucoma
if you experience inflammation of cornea or conjunctiva caused herpes simplex virus (herpetic keratitis)
if you experience eye infection caused by Tuberculosis
if you have viral infections of the eye

You should use Sofradex drops with caution

in children
in pregnancy
in breastfeeding
in prolonged use

Warning!

You should regularly examine your eye condition while you taking tSofradex, as it can some cause eye disturbances. Consult your doctor if you experience any disturbances in your vision while taking this medicine.
Tell your health care provider if after seven days of treatment with Sofradex you do not experience any improvements.
Sofradex may cause temporarily blurry vision . Do not drive or operate machinery unless the vision is clear.
Prolonged or intensive use of Sofradex may lead to an increase of intraocular pressure. This, in its turn, may cause cataracts, glaucoma and damage to the optic nerve.
Do not take this medication by mouth.
Do not use Sofradex to treat redness of the eye that is not diagnosed by your health care provider. Inappropriate use of Sofradex can cause blindness.
Prolonged use of Sofradex may increase the risk of adrenal suppression in infants

Partial loss of vision due cataracts
Irritation
Burning sensation
dermatitis
Increased intraocular pressure
