Active Ingredients: ibuprofen

Therapeutic actions: Ibuprofen and other NSAIDs are thought to work by inhibiting the action of certain hormones that cause inflammation and pain in the body. These hormones are called prostaglandins.

Indications: Paduden is used for:

  • Mild to moderate pain including rheumatic and muscular pain, sprains and strains, backache, neuralgia, migraine, headache, toothache, period pain
  • Feverishness and symptoms of colds and flu

Contraindications and cautions:
You should not use this medication if:

  • Are allergic to ibuprofen, any brands that contain ibuprofen (such as Motrin®, Advil®, Genpril®, Nuprin®, Vicoprofen®, Combunox®, and others), or any inactive components used in making ibuprofen. Your healthcare provider or pharmacist has a list of the inactive ingredients.
  • Have an active bleeding condition, such as a stomach ulcer or bleeding within the head.
  • Have an allergic reaction, hives, or asthma caused by aspirin or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).
  • Are having or have recently had coronary bypass graft surgery (often known as open heart surgery, bypass surgery, or just CABG).
  • Are in the third trimester of pregnancy or nursing.

You should talk with your health care provider prior to taking Paduden if you experience any of these conditions:

  • Asthma
  • Heart disease, including congestive heart failure
  • High blood pressure (hypertension)
  • Liver disease or liver failure
  • Kidney disease or kidney failure
  • Bleeding problems (or if you are taking medicine that decreases your blood's ability to clot)
  • Diabetes
  • Nasal polyps
  • Systemic lupus erythematosus (lupus or SLE)
  • Stomach ulcers, stomach bleeding, or a history of either condition
  • Any allergies to medicines, including aspirin or other NSAID pain medicines.

Let your healthcare provider know if you:

  • Are pregnant or thinking about becoming pregnant
  • Are breastfeeding
  • Drink alcohol frequently
  • Smoke
  • Are having or have recently had heart surgery.

Warning!

  • Very rarely, NSAIDS may cause serious blistering or peeling skin reactions (eg Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis, exfoliative dermatitis). For this reason, you should stop taking this medicine and consult your doctor if you get a skin rash or sores inside your mouth while taking this medicine. This side effect is very rare, but if it occurs, is most likely to happen in the first month of treatment.
  • People with impaired kidney, liver or heart function who are taking this medicine should have their kidney function monitored.
  • Do not exceed the dose recommended in the leaflet supplied with the medicine.
  • If symptoms persist despite treatment, seek medical advice from your doctor or pharmacist.
  • Paduden tablets are not recommended for children under 12 years of age. Other child-specific brands of ibuprofen may be more suitable for this age group - see end of factsheet for more details.

Adverse effects: Medicines and their possible side effects can affect individual people in different ways. The following are some of the side effects that are known to be associated with this medicine. Because a side effect is stated here, it does not mean that all people using this medicine will experience that or any side effect.

  • constipation
  • diarrhea
  • gas or bloating
  • nbsp; dizziness
  • nervousness
  • ringing in the ears

Some side effects can be serious. If you experience any of the following symptoms, or those mentioned in the IMPORTANT WARNING section, call your doctor immediately. Do not take any more ibuprofen until you speak to your doctor.

  • unexplained weight gain
  • fever
  • blisters
  • rash
  • itching
  • hives
  • swelling of the eyes, face, throat, arms, hands, feet, ankles, or lower legs
  • difficulty breathing or swallowing
  • hoarseness
  • excessive tiredness
  • pain in the upper right part of the stomach
  • upset stomach
  • loss of appetite
  • yellowing of the skin or eyes
  • flu-like symptoms
  • pale skin
  • fast heartbeat
  • cloudy, discolored, or bloody urine
  • back pain
  • difficult or painful urination
  • blurred vision, changes in color vision, or other vision problems
  • red or painful eyes
  • stiff neck
  • headache
  • confusion
  • aggression

Interactions:
It is important to tell your doctor or pharmacist what medicines you are already taking, including those bought without a prescription and herbal medicines, before you start treatment with this medicine. Similarly, check with your doctor or pharmacist before taking any new medicines while taking this one, to ensure that the combination is safe.
Especially pay attention to the following drugs:
Other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as

  • naproxen (Naprosyn®), naproxen sodium (Aleve®, Anaprox®, Naprelan®), diclofenac (Cataflam®, Voltaren®), indomethacin (Indocin®), nabumetone (Relafen®), oxaprozin (Daypro®), celecoxib (Celebrex®), meloxicam (Mobic®), etodolac (Lodine®), ketoprofen, ketorolac (Toradol®), and others
  • Warfarin (Coumadin®, Jantoven®)
  • Aspirin
  • Lithium (Eskalith®, Lithane®, Lithonate®, Lithotabs®)
  • Diuretics, such as torsemide (Demadex®), furosemide (Lasix®), and hydrochlorothiazide
  • Angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACE inhibitors), such as lisinopril (Zestril®, Prinivil®), fosinopril (Monopril®), captopril (Capoten®), quinapril (Accupril®), benazepril (Lotensin®), enalapril (Vasotec®), and ramipril (Altace®)
  • Methotrexate (Rheumatrex®, Trexall™)
  • Beta blockers, such as metoprolol (Lopressor®), propranolol (Inderal®), atenolol (Tenormin®), and metoprolol (Toprol XL®)
  • Corticosteroids, such as prednisone, hydrocortisone (Cortef®), dexamethasone (Decadron®, Dexone®, Hexadrol®), and many others.
  • Several herbal and nutritional supplements can also interact with ibuprofen and may increase the risk of bleeding. Examples of these include but are not limited to:
  • Dong quai
  • Feverfew
  • Garlic
  • Ginger
  • Ginkgo biloba
  • Ginseng
  • St. John's wort
  • Fish oil supplements.
