Therapeutic actions: Topiramate is an oral drug used for the treatment and preventions of epileptic seizures. The drug works by suppressing the production of neurotransmitters thus suppressing the abnormal activity and preventing the transportation of abnormal impulses to other nerves. The drug is also used in treatment of migraine headaches.
Indications: The drug is used as monotherapy and as subsidiary therapy in different conditions. Monotherapy in patients with diagnosed epilepsy. As subsidiary therapy in adults and children from 3 years old with partial or generalized tonicoclonic episodes and treatment of epileptic seizures on the background of Lennox-Gastaut syndrome
Contraindications and cautions: The drugs should not be used in the following conditions:
- Hypersensitivity to any components of the preparation
- Pregnancy
- Lactation period
- Age younger then 11 years in monotherapy and from 3 years as subsidiary treatment
The therapy should not be stopped suddenly due to possibility of withdrawal syndrome occurrence. The secretion period may be altered if the patient suffers from renal dysfunction. Change of mood and depression episodes may occur when treating with Epiramat.
Adverse effects: There are possible side-effects associated with this medicine that can affect individuals in different ways. If a side effect is stated here, that does not necessarily mean the fact that all people using Epiramat will experience it or any other. The side-effects include:
