Maxalt contains the active ingredient rizatriptan benzoate which belongs to a group of medicines called agonists of 5-HT1D- receptors. By acting on serotonin receptors Maxalt narrows some blood vessels in the brains, helping to relieve the symptoms of migraine. Maxalt is metabolized via MAO type A.Indications: Maxalt is indicated for the treatment of migraine.
Contraindications and cautions:
Maxalt should not be taken if the following conditions apply to you:- High blood pressure
- Coronary heart disease
- Angina
- Abnormal heart rhythm
- High cholesterol
- Diabetes
- Liver and kidney diseases
- Depression
- Phenylketonuria
- Blood vessel conditions like peripheral vascular disease, ischemic bowel disease or Raynaud's phenomenon
- Heart attack in anamnesis
- Concomitant use of MAO or a period less than 2 weeks after cessation the therapy with MAO

- Maxalt may cause the following side effects: weakness, dizziness, drowsiness, nausea, abnormal sensation (pateshesia), chest pain, xerostomia.
