Therapeutic actions: Diltiazem belongs to a group of medications called calcium channels blockers. It works by blocking a certain number of L-type calcium channels that are found in the walls of the blood vessels. Calcium ions enter the muscle cells of the vessels and cause them to constrict. By blocking calcium channels, Dilteazem decreases the content of calcium ions inside the cells, resulting in relaxing of muscle cells and reducing high blood pressure inside the blood vessels. Diltiazem reduces the contractility of the heart tissue, heart rate and retards AV-conductibility, decreases peripheral resistance.
