Therapeutic actions: Diovan(valsartan) belongs to a group of medicines called angiotensin II receptor antagonists. By blocking angiotensin receptors Diovan impairs its vasocontrictive effects leading to peripheral vaso dilatation. Due to peripheral vasodilation Diovan lowers high blood pressure. Therapeutic effect of Diovan occurs in 2 hours and is completely eliminated out of the organism within 24 hours. Diovan does not possess withdrawal symptoms in the cases of sudden therapy termination.
Diovan is also effective in heart failure due to improvement of blood flow to the heart.
Indications: Diovan is indicated in the following conditions:
- High blood pressure(Hypertension)
- Heart failure
- Post-infarction conditions
Contraindications and cautions: Before taking Diovan be sure to let your health care provider know if you experience the following conditions:
- Hypersensitivity or allergy to any of the medication active ingredients
- Kidney diseases
- Cardiovascular diseases
- High level of dehydration
- Liver diseases including
- Gallstones or other gallbladder problems
- Diabetes
- On dialysis
- Pregnancy
- Breastfeeding
Adverse effects: There are possible side-effects associated with this medicine that can affect individuals in different ways. If a side effect is stated here, that does not necessarily mean the fact that all people using Diovan will experience it or any other.
- Most common Diovan side effects include: dizziness, blood potassium levels, viral infection, cough, fatigue, stomach pain, diarrhea, low blood pressure, skin allergic reactions
- Less common side effects: joint and back pain

- Diuretics or water pills(potassium sparing diuretics)
- Drugs containing potassium
- ACE inhibitors
- Beta blockers
