Finoptin
Drug name: Finoptin
Active Ingredients:
- verapamil
Therapeutic actions: Verapamil belongs to a group of cardiovascular preparations called calcium channels blockers. By blocking calcium channels Verapamil lowers the amount of calcium ions inside the cells of the blood vessels and heart tissue. Peripheral resistance and cardiac work are reduced. As a result, verapamil exerts anti-hypertensive, antianginal, vasodilating, negative ino- and chronotropic action. Verapamil also reduces AV-conductibility, extends refracterity phase and suppresses automatism of the sinus node.
Indications: Verapamil is used in the following conditions:
- Stable angina
- Prinzematl's anhina
- Supraventricular tachycardia
- Sinus tachycardia
- Ciliary arrhythmia
- Atrial flutter
- Auricular extrasystole
- Hypertension or high blood pressure
- Idiopathic hypertrophic subaortic stenosis
- Pulmonary hypertension
Contraindications and cautions: Verapamil is contraindicated in the following conditions:
- Heart attack(myocardial infarction) and its complications: slow heart rate, heart failure and hypotension(low blood pressure)
- Cardiogenic shock
- Second and third degree heart block
- Sino-atrial heart block
- Heart failure that can not be controlled by drug therapy.
- Bradycardia
- Low blood pressure
- Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome, Lown-Ganong-Levine syndrome
- Porphyrias
- Pregnancy
- Breastfeeding
You should use Finoptin with caution if any of the following conditions apply to you:
- Severe kidney and liver dysfunctions
- first degree heart block
- Heart failure
Avoid drinking alcohol and grape fruit juice while taking verapamil.
Do not drive or operate machinery while taking Finoptin

- CNS: Flushing, headache, dizziness, fatigue, pins and needles sensations.
- Digestive system: nausea, vomiting, constipation
- Cardiovascular system: heart block or heart failure,slowed heart rate
- Allergic reactions: skin rash, itching
- Other: Reversible enlargement of the gums, reversible enlargement of the breasts in elderly men, liver dysfunction

Verapamil enhances the antihypertensive effects of the drugs that used to treat high blood pressure including ACE inhibitors, alpha-blockers such as prazosin, angiotensin II receptor antagonists such as losartan or valzartan, beta-blockers such as propranolol, calcium channel blockers such as nifedipine, diltiazem, diuretics,dopamine agonists, hydralazine, nitrates, eg glyceryl trinitrate, diazoxide, MAO antidepressants, eg phenelzine,
Verapamil increases blood levels of the following medications: atorvastatin, buspirone, carbamazepine, digoxin, eplerenone, midazolam, quinidine, simvastatin, sirolimus, tacrolimus, theophylline, phenobarbital, phenytoin, rifampicin and Hypericum perforatum( herbal remedy St John's wort) makes Verapamil less effective.
