Drug name: Medrol
Therapeutic actions: Methylprednisolone belongs to a group of synthetic corticosteroids. Corticosteroids are naturally produced by the adrenal glands and possess a wide variety of function. Methylprednisolone works by inhibiting the release of certain chemicals that are responsible in inflammation or allergy processes. Methylprednisolone can also reduce numbers of white blood cells. This in its turn helps to prevent the rejection of organ transplants caused by attacking by the white blood cells the foreign tissue.
Indications: Medrol is used to treat the following conditions:
- Endocrine diseases: Primary and secondary insufficiency of the adrenal glands(congenital hyperplasia of the adrenal glands; nonpurulent thyroiditis)
- Rheumatoid diseases: psoriatic arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, including juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, spondylarthtiris, acute and subacute bursitis, unspecific tendosynovitis, acute gouty arthritis, post-traumatic osteoarthrosis, synovitis with osteoarthrosis, epicondylitis.
- Collagenoses: system lupus erythematosis, system dermatomyositis (poly-myositis), acute rheumatic carditis, rheumatic poly-myalgia.
- Skin diseases: Dermatitis,severe psoriasis, severe seboreic dermatitis.
- Respiratory system diseases: Symptomatic sarcoidosis, Loeffler syndrom, pulmonary tuberculosis, asthma.
- Hematologic diseases: idiopathic thrombocytopenia, secondary thrombocytopenia , hemolytic anemia, hypoplastic anemia
- Digestive diseases: Non specific colitis, enteritis
- Lymphatic Acute and lymphatic leukemia
- Lymphoma(Cancer of the lymph nodes)
- Inflammation of the eye (iritis and optic neuritis)
- Edema syndrome
Contraindications and cautions:
- Do not use this medication if you have hypersensitivity or allergy to Methylprednisolone.
- Do not use Medrol if you suffer from infection caused by fungi.
- Pregnancy
- Breastfeeding
You should talk with your health care provider prior to taking Medrol if you experience the following conditions:
- In children
- In elderly people
- Muscle weakness
- Infection that produces pus
- Kidney diseases
- Diabetes or family history of diabetes
- Seizures related to epilepsy
- Glaucoma or family history of glaucoma
- Congestive Heart failure
- Eye infection caused by Herpes simplex virus
- Hypertension
- Mental disorder
- Peptic ulcer
- Post-menopausal women
- Hypothyroidism
- Diverticulitis
- Colitis
- Liver diseases(cirrhosis or liver failure)
- Osteoporosis
- Muscle disease caused by steroids
- Intestinal anastomosis
- Thrombophlebitis
- Tuberculosis
Warning!
- Avoid prolonged use Medrol
- Do not use chickenpox vaccine while taking Medrol.
- Do not suddenly stop taking Medrol
- You can experience high blood pressure while taking this medication.
- Medrol can mask the symptoms of some infections.
