New Clinical Trial Shows Lutein Can Help Improve Skin Health
05/14/07
A randomised clinical study entitled New Evidence for Efficacy of Lutein/Zeaxanthin in skin health has just been published in the journal of Skin Pharmacology and Physiology and shows that FloraGLO lutein increases photo-protective activity, hydration, elasticity and lipid levels of the skin. The randomised, double-blind placebo-controlled study was led by Prof. Morganti of the dermatology department at the University of Naples, Italy. It took place over 12 weeks and involved 120 women aged between 25 and 50 (average age: 35 years) with varied skin types and premature signs of cutaneous ageing. The clinical study is based on the results of four groups of the women who followed one of the following treatments: -- Group1: Oral soft gel supplement of FloraGLO Lutein 20% in Safflower Oil in combination with a topical application of a preparation formulated with FloraGLO Lutein 5% Oil-Free Liquid -- Group 2: Oral soft gel supplement of FloraGLO Lutein 20% in Safflower Oil plus a topical placebo -- Group 3: An oral placebo supplement plus a topical application of a preparation formulated with FloraGLO Lutein 5% Oil-Free Liquid -- Group 4: An oral placebo supplement and a topical placebo. The results of the clinical trial show that after 12 weeks of treatment, a supplement of FloraGLO Lutein has the following beneficial effects on the skin: Improved skin photo-protection Skin photo-protective activity improves 2.5 times when FloraGLO Lutein is used in oral application and 4.2 times when the oral and topical treatments are combined - demonstrating a clear synergic effect between the two treatments. Improved skin elasticity After 12 weeks of the topical treatment or by combined oral supplement and topical application, the study shows an increase of skin elasticity of 68% in comparison with the initial value. With oral supplementation alone, the increase is 56%. Improved skin hydration Skin hydration improved by 82% after 12 weeks of combined oral and topical treatment. Meanwhile those who took only oral supplementation saw an increase of 60% while though who used only the topical treatment had an increase of 62% after 12 weeks. Effect on skin lipid levels Finally, the study revealed a positive and significant effect on skin lipid levels. An increase of 63% was reported for the patients who followed the combined treatment of FloraGLO Lutein while an increase of 46% was noted among those who only took the oral treatment. Furthermore, after 12 weeks, a decrease of 65% lipid peroxidation was observed when an oral and topical treatment with FloraGLO Lutein was used and a decrease of 63% when subjects only used the topical treatment. Summary To conclude then, the study found that a daily oral supplementation with 10 mg of FloraGLO Lutein, taken over 12 weeks, increases not only skin photoprotective activity but also skin hydration, lipid levels and elasticity. A significant reduction in lipid peroxidation was also observed. Importantly, when FloraGLO Lutein is administered in combined oral and topical treatment, the beneficial effects on the skin are even more noticeable. FloraGLO lutein is the exact same lutein molecule found in foods such as eggs, spinach and other dark green leafy vegetables. It is produced for inclusion in products through a patented process and the resulting purified lutein is the highest quality available. FloraGLO lutein is currently included in a number of Vitamins and mineral supplements available from pharmacies and health food stores. Look for the FloraGLO logo on the label.
