Puri-Nethol
Drug name: Puri-Nethol
Active Ingredients:
- Mercaptopurine
Therapeutic actions: The active ingredient of Puri-nethol is mercaptopurine. Mercaptopurine is an anti cancer and anti metabolic substance. Mercaptopurine works by stopping the abnormal tumor cells to reproduce. The structure of mercaptopurine is close to purine base: guanine, hypoxanthine that are essential components in nucleic acids. Mercaptopurine disturbs the synthesis of mucleic acids that play an important tole in tissue proliferation including tumor tissues.
Indications: Puri-Nethol is used to treat the following conditions:
- Acute lymphoblastic leucosis
- Acute myeloleukemia
- Acute myelocytic leucosis
- Crhronic lymphoblastic leucosis.
- Reticulosis
- Chronic granulocytic leucosis
- Chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML)
- Ulcerative colitis
- Crohn's disease
Contraindications and cautions: You should not use Puri-Nethol in the following conditions:
- Allergy or hypersensitivity to mercaptopurine
- Breastfeeding
- Pregnancy
Use Puri-Nethol with caution in :
- Leucopenia
- Trombocytopenia
- Acute viral infections
- Infections caused by bacteria or fungi
- Kidney or liver failure
- Hyperuricemia
- Gout
Warning!
- Mercaptopurine may decrease the number of blood cells. This in its turn can cause anemia, increase susceptibility to infections and blood clotting problems.
- Your health care provider should regularly check your blood levels, liver and kidney failure while you receiving anti cancer treatment.
- Regularly make urine tests while taking this medication.
Adverse effects: There are possible side-effects associated with this medicine that can affect individuals in different ways. If a side effect is stated here, that does not necessarily mean the fact that all people using Puri-Nethol will experience it or any other.
- Leucopenia
- Thrombocytopenia
- Dyspepsia(vomiting and nausea)
- Loss of appetite
- Mouth ulcers
- Diarrhea
- Alopecia
- Allergic reactions of the skin
- Fever
- Ulcers in the intestines
- Temporary decrease in sperm count
- Liver disease
- Pancreatitis- inflammation of the pancreas

- The effect of some vaccines may be decreased while taking Puri-Nethol
- Allopurinol may increase the blood level of mercaptopurine
- Aminosalicylate medicines (mesalazine , olsalazine, sulfazalazine) may also increase mercaptopurine blood level.
- The anti-blood-clotting effect of Warfarin may be decreased while taking Puri-Nethol.
