Sandostatin
Drug name: Sandostatin
Active Ingredients:
- Octreotide acetate
Therapeutic actions: Sandostatin is a synthetic hormone which in its action is similar to somostatin a body produced hormone. Octreotide the active ingredient Sandostatin acts by lowering the levels of insulin, glucagon, growth hormone and specific chemicals that affect digestion.
Indications: The drug is used in treatment of the following disease:
- Acromegaly
- Symptoms of cancerous tumors like diarrhea and flushing
- Treatment of VIP adenomas
Contraindications and cautions: Do not use Octreotide or consult your doctor if any of the following apply to you:
- Gallbladder disorder
- Heart disease
- Thyroid dysfunction
- Diabetes
- Pancreatitis
- Kidney disease
- Liver dysfunction
Sandostatin is in FDA pregnancy category B but you should still consult your doctor if you plan to become pregnant, are pregnant or are breastfeeding.
