Algifen
Drug name: Algifen
Active Ingredients:
- fenpiverinium bromide,
- Metamizole sodium monohydrate,
- pitofenone hydrochloride
Therapeutic actions: Algifen is a combine medication that belongs to the group of analgesic and spasmolytic preparations. Metamizole sodium possesses analgesic, antipyretic and anti-inflammatory action. Pitofenone exerts direct myotropic action on the smooth muscles of the internals. Due to its anticholinergic activity Fenpiverinium bromide exerts additional relaxing action on the smooth muscles. Combination of these three active ingredient leads to synergism in pharmaceutical effect manifested in pain relief, relaxing of the smooth muscles, decrease in fever.
Indications: Algifen is used to relieve biliary and renal colic,spasms in gastrointestinal tract, painful spasms of the urinary bladder, spastic dysmenorrhoea and migraine.
Algifen is indicated as antispasmodic and analgesic before and after instrumental examinations, in gynaecological surgery;
Contraindications and cautions: Algifen should not be used in the following conditions:
- Hypersensitivity to any component of the preparation
- Hypersensitivity to any component of the preparation;
- Blood dyscrasia
- Bone marrow suppression
- Active gastric or duodenal ulceration
- Sever hepatic or renal impairment
- Paralytic ileus
- Pregnancy and lactation.
It is not recommended to administer Algifen in patients with history of gastrointestinal ulcerations, acute intermittent porphyria, glucoso-6-phosphate deficiency, anaemia, hypertension, cardiac insufficiency, fluid retention, circulatory collapse tendency, prostatic hypertrophy; closed-angle glaucoma, mechanical causes of intestinal obstruction, megacolon.
The preparation is not indicated for children under 14 years of age.
Adverse effects: There are possible side-effects associated with this medicine that can affect individuals in different ways. If a side effect is stated here, that does not necessarily mean the fact that all people using Algifen will experience it or any other.
Algifen is usually well tolerated . In some cases allergic reactions(skin rash, itching), abdominal pain, dry mouth, headache, dizziness, reduced blood pressure, cyanosis and polycardia may occur. In prolonged use trombocytopenia, leukopenia and neutropenia are possible as well.

- Combination of Algifen and other NSAID's may increase the risk of side effects. Do not use Algifen in combination with antidepressants, birth control pills and allopurinol.
- Barbiturates, phenylbutazone and other inductors of the microsomal liver enzymes lower the activity of metamizole.
- Sedative and antipsychotic medications enhance analgesic effect of Algifen.
- Algifen may increase cyclosporine blood levels.
