Active Ingredients:
Lansoprazole
Therapeutic actions: Lansoprazole is in a class of medications called proton-pump inhibitors. Proton pumps are found on cells that line the stomach and are used by these cells to produce stomach acid. Lansoprazole works by inhibiting the action of the proton pumps, and this reduces the production of stomach acid.
Indications: Lansoprazole is indicated for:
- Treatment of ulcers of the stomach and duodenum, and NSAID-induced ulcers
- Treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) (also known as acid reflux disease)
- Treatment of Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome
- Adjunctive treatment of Helicobacter pylori infection, alongside antibiotics .
Contraindications and cautions:
- Use with caution in: - Severely decreased liver function.
- Not to be used in - Known sensitivity or allergy to any ingredient.
- As lansoprazole decreases the acidity in the stomach, it may lead to a slightly increased risk of stomach infections such as Salmonella and Campylobacter. Stomach cancer can have similar symptoms to stomach ulcers, and these symptoms can be relieved by lansoprazole. For this reason, if it is suspected that you have a stomach ulcer, your doctor should exclude the possibility of stomach cancer before you start treatment with this medicine. Otherwise, this medicine could mask the symptoms of stomach cancer and therefore delay diagnosis of this condition. This is particularly important if you are middle aged or older and have new or recently changed symptoms.
- The manufacturer has not studied this medicine in children. It is not recommended for children.
Adverse effects: Medicines and their possible side effects can affect individual people in different ways. The following are some of the side effects that are known to be associated with this medicine. Because a side effect is stated here, it does not mean that all people using this medicine will experience that or any side effect.
- Headache
- Dizziness
- Fatigue
- A general feeling of being unwell (malaise)
- Disturbances of the gut such as diarrhoea, constipation, nausea, vomiting, flatulence or abdominal pain
- Dry or sore mouth or throat
- Skin reactions such as rash and itch
- Abnormal reaction of the skin to light, usually a rash (photosensitivity)
- Hair thinning
- Liver disorders
- Pain in the muscles and joints
- Depression
- Impotence
- Disturbances in the levels of blood cells in the blood
- Abnormal enlargement of breasts in men (gynaecomastia)
- Swelling of the ankles due to fluid retention (peripheral oedema)
- Pins and needles (paraesthesia)
- Blurred vision
- Confusion

- PPI’s reduce absorption of antifungals (itraconazole and ketoconazole) and possibly increase Digoxin in plasma
- Increases plasma concentrations of Cilostazol (risk of toxicity)
- Absorption of lansoprazole possibly reduced by:
- sucralfate
- ampicillin
- bisacodyl
- delavirdine
- fluvoxamine
- iron salts
- theophylline
- voriconazole
- aminophylline and theophylline
- astemizole
