Therapeutic actions: Omeprazole belongs to a group of drugs known as proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). Stomach cells contains proton pumps that are responsible for production of acid hydrochloric. High concentration of hydrochloric acid in the stomach may cause damage and irritation of the mucous lining resulting in gas tritis or ulcers. Omeprasole works by selectively blocking the enzyme H+/K+ ATP-ase responsible for transportation of ions H+ into the stomach cavity. Thereby, Omeprazole prevents hyperacidity in the sromach. Omeprazole does not act on acetylcholine and histamine receptors.
Indications: Omeprazole is used in the following conditions:
- Stomach and duodenal ulcers
- Duodenal ulcers associated with Helicobacter pylori (in combination with antibiotics)
- Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)(Omeprazole relieves heartburn and heals esophagus damage (esophagitis))
- Mendelson's syndrome
- Hypersecretory stomach conditions(Zollinger-Ellison syndrome)
Contraindications and cautions: Omeprazole should not be used in:
- Liver failure or liver cirrhosis
- Known hypersensitivity or allergy to any of the medication active ingredients
- Pregnancy
- Breastfeeding
By lowering stomach hyper acidity, Omeprazole may mask the symptoms of stomach or duodenal tumors.
Adverse effects: There are possible side-effects associated with this medicine that can affect individuals in different ways. If a side effect is stated here, that does not necessarily mean the fact that all people using Omeprazole will experience it or any other.
- CNS: headache,dizziness, back pain
- Digestive system: abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea, constipation
- Respiratory system: common cold
- Skin: rash and itching(in rare cases)
In some cases Omeprazole may cause severe side effects such as pancreas and liver damage, depression.

Omeprezole may decrease blood levels of ampicillin, atazanavir, iron supplements, ketoconazole making medicines less effective.
Omeprazole may enhance the effects of citalopram, escitalopram, diazepam, phenytoin, tacrolimus, warfarin leading to high risk of side effects.
