Approximately three-quarters of all women will experience an episode of vulvovaginal candidosis at least once in their life and 5-10% of them will have more than one attack. Vulvo-vaginal candidosis (VVC) is a very common condition and most women will experience at least one episode during their reproductive years. A minority of women, however, suffer recurrent episodes of candidosis which can significantly affect their quality of life and their sexual health. Vaginal candidosis represents a significant health problem to women of childbearing age worldwide. While a number of factors are probably important in the pathogenesis of recurrent thrush, there are two main theories as to why some women experience frequent recurrences:

- Re-infection either from a sexual partner or a reservoir of yeasts in the gut

- Vaginal relapse due to incomplete eradication of the yeasts.
