Therapeutic actions:
Fosamax contains the active ingredient Alendronic acid which belongs to a group of medicines called bisphosphonate. Fosamax is an inhibitor of bone resorbtion which is localized in the areas of active bone resorbtion under the osteoclasts. Alendronic acid does not cause a direct action on the process of production of new bone tissue. Fosamax contributes to formation of bone tissue. In therapeutic doses Fosamax does not cause osteomalacia.
Indications: Fosamax is approved to treat the following conditions:
- Treatment of osteoporosis in women in postmenopause
- Prophylaxis of osteoporosis in men
- Treatment of osteoporosis in men
- Osteoporosis treatment which is induced by corticosteroids
- Paget disease in men and women
Contraindications and cautions:
Fosamax should not be taken if these conditions apply to you:
- Hypersensitivity to any of the medication ingredients
- Pregnancy
- Breastfeeding
- Esophagus diseases which slow down its evacuation
- Inability to sit and stay within 30 minutes
The medication should be used with caution in diseases of the digestive system such as dysphagia, esophagus diseases, gastritis, duodenitis and stomach ulcer. It is not recommended to indicate Fosamax for patients with creatinine clearance 35 ml/min.
Adverse effects: There are possible side effects associated with this medicine that can affect individuals in different ways. If a side effect is stated here, that does not necessarily mean the fact that all people using Fosamax will experience it or any other. Fosamax may cause the following side effects:
- Digestive system: stomach pain, dyspepsia, dysphagia, meteorism, constipation, diarrhea, acid eructation.
- Apparatus system: pain in the bones, joints, muscular seizures, myalgia
- CNS: headache
- Dermatological reactions: skin rash, erythema, photosensibilization, itching
- Allergic reactions: hives, angioedema, toxic epidermal necrolisis, Stevens Johnson's syndrome
- Metabolism: low calcium blood levels
- Sense organs: uveitis, scleritis, episcleritis.
